They see this defeat as a destabilizing threat to their own legitimacy at home & won't forgive Biden until he gives them a new war, which he almost surely will. Dangerous times ahead for all.

• UAE Covid-19 Death Toll Exceeds 2,000 For First Time, 1,189 New Cases (AlA)
That is quite a headline. “Death Toll Exceeds 2,000 For First Time.” Raul then says “Most vaccinated country on earth. They work great.”
At first glance, someone might read that headline and get the impression that there were over 2000 deaths in one day? But, it turns out, we are really talking about 2000 total deaths. Is there really a way for UAE to exceed 2000 total deaths for a second time?
UAE is averaging about 4 deaths a day since about March.
So out of ~9.7 million people, 2000 have died, total? What is the insinuation here? 72% of the population is fully vaxxed. Is it really hard to believe that there could be like 1400 cases a day? Or is Raul saying that the vaccines really are working? I assume he was being facetious.
I am not sure if I am missing something?
August 16, 2021 at 12:11 pm #84028Basseterre KitonaParticipant(ALL health care here is Govt paid positions and there are no private health care Doctors or Hospitals etc.) Since the Health care system is state run and funded, it has been run into the ground. All the good doctors left France 5 Years ago, all the hospitals look like they are 3rd world hospitals since there is no money to repair them, half of the equipment doesn’t work and not every hospital is stocked with supplies needed for daily needs (masks, gels, disposable gowns etc).
This is not accurate because there are private doctors and hospitals in France. I know because I have spent a lot of time dealing with them during the past five years. I think that a lot of people, especially Americans, are ignorant or confused about how French health care system works. It is not an entirely government run, single payer system like some other countries.
Instead, government administers the social security taxes that account for most (but not all) of healhcare funding. For example, I go to my general practitioner doctor and pay him (typically cash) and then file a paper for a reimbursement with the social security system. That system sets a limit on the reimbursable expense, presently about 25 € for an office visit. Now as my doctor is quite expensive, he charges 100 € per visit. I then get reimbursed the 25 € from the state’s social security coffers (which I paid into via taxes by the way). The other 75€ is up to me to pay, however, there is also a type of private health insurance available in France called a mutuel. I have a good mutuel which thus reimburses the additional expense form my doctor.
On the whole, it is a good system as it forces the patient to have some savings to account for their care before they get reimbursed and most importantly, it promotes a level of price transparency that is especially absent in most American healthcare. Unfortunately, this system is beginning to change with more of the transactions becoming automatic payments linked to the health card (Carte Vitale). My personal doctor is a bit old-fashioned with his use of cash and paper reimbursement forms that need to be mailed to social security. It’s a bit inconvenient but probably worth the effort given that the alternative is an opaque system of automatic transfers that can be difficult to track for the average person (and thus prone to unnecessary price increases.)
I also had surgery at a private hospital in France. They do exist. Again, reimbursement prices are set by the social security administration and then the French doctors & hospitals work within the framework. As it turned out, I did not pay any extra to the hospital for my surgery.
Lastly, one more note about France. Because of summer vacation season, big French cities tend to be ghost towns in August, so take the images of empty or closed cafes with a grain of salt. I have no doubt that people are resisting the Health Passport BS but it will be more interesting to see how it looks come September after everybody returns from their holidays.
August 16, 2021 at 12:19 pm #84029Dr. DParticipantSo…Not to lose 200 diplomats and contractors, we’re going to trap 5,000 soldiers in an ambush and siege. Good job, Brownie!
Well, get your bake-sales ready to get them home ‘cause Joe won’t.
From Armstrong:
“There is a French book entitled L’Avenir De La Vie (“The Future of Life”) by Michel Salomon, who is a journalist and doctor back in 1981, he interviewed twenty scientists including seven Nobel Prize winners, and which thus relates his conversation with Jacques Attali, who at the time was the adviser to François Mitterrand. In that interview, it provides a clear warning of how they look down upon us, the great unwashed, which is the blueprint for what they are doing using Covid-19 to change the world economically and politically.
“In the future it will be about finding a way to reduce the population. We will start with the old, because as soon as he is over 60-65 years of age, man lives longer than he produces and costs society dearly. Then the weak and then the useless who do nothing for society because there will be more and more of them, and especially finally the stupid ones.
Euthanasia targeting these groups; euthanasia will have to be an essential instrument of our future societies, in all cases. Of course, we cannot execute people or set up camps. We will get rid of it by making them believe it is for their own good. Too large a population, and for the most part unnecessary, is something economically too expensive.
Socially, it is also much better for the human machine to come to a screeching halt rather than gradually deteriorating. We won’t be able to give intelligence tests to millions and millions of people, you can imagine!
We will find something or cause it, a pandemic that targets certain people, a real economic crisis or not, a virus that will affect the old or the big, it doesn’t matter, the weak will succumb to it, the fearful and the stupid will believe it and ask to be treated.
We will have taken care to have planned the treatment, a treatment that will be the solution. The selection of idiots will thus be done by themselves: they will go to the slaughterhouse on their own. “ “The future of life” – Jacques Attali, 1981, interview with Michel Salomon.
When I say they proudly and happily publish this years before with their names on it, I’m not kidding. Now if this were Neil Gaiman, maybe that would be nothing. But they are uniformly top advisors to political policy.
So you don’t need to add it, he does: “This book is currently out of print. Perfect coincidence.”
“The US gave itself all away in 24 hours.”

Malone definitively deserves the Nobel Prize if by his own scientific and moral warnings he is risking the Nobel Prize. That’s ethics and true science. Guys who unzip the pants of Banking (Krugman), War (Obama), or pharma, definitively do NOT deserve the Nobel Prize. Nor 12-year-old girls who dropped out of school to hold cardboard signs for their parents. Not Prize-stuff. So you can be sure the Opposite will happen.
France: hey I thought government-run socialized medicine was da bomb, not A bomb. And here yet another country bankrupted and failed by it. And shutdown, shortages. We already have that, and not from Corona. We’re just getting started. The passport/rules are just the cover for a collapse/shortages that are worldwide. August 16, 2021 at 12:47 pm #84031Polder DwellerParticipant@Dr. D.
I posted that same Attali piece a while back. Somebody asked me if I was sure it was genuine so I went searching and found that this was disputed and that, according to many French fact-checking sites, the quote was bogus.
I didn’t give up there though, and eventually found a website where it was said that the original 1981 book did indeed have that passage, but that it had been removed from the later reprint. It’s probably out of print now to allow for some more redactions…
August 16, 2021 at 1:04 pm #84032Polder DwellerParticipantAt last Friday’s Covid presser it was announced that from 20 September all public venues (cinemas, theatres, restaurants etc) with space for more than 75 people would be required to show proof of vaccination, recovery from infection within the last six months or a negative test.
The minister for health was asked by a journalist whether it wouldn’t be better if everyone were tested, both vaccinated and unvaccinated alike. The minister replied that that would be better, but that it would remove the incentive to get vaccinated. So it’s clear that health and reducing the chances of infections have nothing to do with the measures being put in place, it’s all about getting jabs into everyone’s arms.
The reason for this, it is becoming apparent, is to be able to roll out the Digital ID Wallet that useful idiot von der Leyen and her team of equally useful (or should that be useless?) idiots have been trying to warm people up to for some time now.
This is next level Orwellian nightmare or is it Revelations?
August 16, 2021 at 1:05 pm #84033upstateNYerParticipant“The Biden administration is offering cash to Florida school districts that defy Gov. Ron DeSantis …”
States hold power and an end-run-around by the federal gov’t using taxpayer* dollars is not a good look. Especially considering how many people are now relocating to so-called red states to avoid what’s happening in so-called blue states. It appears these types of provocation (half of us could be domestic terrorists at this point!!) aren’t going to end until they get the blow back they’re so desperately seeking.
John Day: sorry to hear about the vaxx or get terminated you might soon face. Little disheartening considering you’re in TX. I hope Karl D is correct and that enough people quitting rather than giving in will begin to slow this tide.
*Yeah, I know, it’s not really tax money but let’s not split hairs.
August 16, 2021 at 1:14 pm #84034upstateNYerParticipantAbout the digital ID wallets. I don’t know what it’s like in other countries, but here in the US there is a robust underground economy that operates outside electronic transactions and devices. In addition, many people, especially those who live in rural areas, have no interest in providing gov’t or financial institutions with access to their personal lives. Other people, even city dwellers, don’t have smart phones and have no intention of getting one. So are ID wallets rolled out for use by subservient people only?

August 16, 2021 at 4:17 pm #84053NoiretteParticipantThe US ‘invasion’ of Afghanistan was agreed to by the International Community (UN, WEF, other meets, agreements, Big Cos.) before 9/11. It was a done deal..
See previous history of Afgh, the death of Empires, the funding of the Mujahideen, aka Taliban cousins, the withdrawal of the Russians.. the clout of the USA, the speedy attack, the lack of of objection(s).
It was understood by all, e.g. Algerians, the Swiss, for ex. and the Chinese, that Afgh. and its poppy trade would be US-controlled. Hype about precious, rare, minerals (before the US attack > to the US public, as if that provided a rationale for killing children..! Gotta grab the ressources!) was clarioned, but seen as empty.
Afaik no US company has invested in mining in Afghanistan in the past 15 years. (?..? …)
The only ones to do so were Chinese, iirc. A wiki with lists of Cos. active in Afgh. with sums existed, can’t find it now. Idk. In any case this is very complicated, with Cos. under Cos., shareholders, etc.
Afgh. provided various US-based-Cos. with fantastic oppos, from the low-key printing of educational text-books to be shunted to the ‘native’ ppl by NGOs, USAID, etc. to those involved in construction and infrastructure (very lucrative), and then to the big money bags – Drugs, Arms, and forced imports. (Deprive a country of basic medecine, then sell at top price.)
Trump had no interest in Afgh, it was a flogged dying horse in his mind, and Biden has simply followed that policy to its end point.
The Chinese have recognised the Taliban as the new Overlords, aka Gvmt. in Afgh.

The banks here (with the EC behind them, I think) are trying hard to stamp out the use of cash. I was recently informed by my bank that I can now withdraw no more than €12,000 per year in cash without incurring charges. The government is also behind this. If I want to give my daughter some money, I am limited to €6,600 per year before paying tax on it. Obviously, if I give her €10,000 in cash, the tax office won’t know.
Interestingly, the most cashless country in the EU is Sweden where shops, bars and restaurants find it strange or even awkward if you want to pay with cash, and the least cashless? That would be Germany. I know plenty of Germans who stick to cash as much as they can.
