These days, at my age, whenever I am working with wood, I only use screws, often just rust resistant deck screws.
Screws are more expensive than nails, but they have one very big advantage. They can be quickly removed if needed for any reason. Often when you are building something new, you make adjustments as you go along.
Removing nails often requires badly damaging the wood, one way or another. So you skip making a change or improvement.
Then 10, 20, 30 years later, or the next day, week, month, year, if you suddenly need to make a new change to an existing structure you made, it is often a piece of cake to do, as all you need to do is remove a few screws!I can’t tell you how many times I have cursed the original builder (often me!) who built it to last forever!
