Are there too many of us?
Preface. This post summarizes the 20 top reasons why population growth was abandoned the past 40 years. A deeper understanding can be found in the excellent Beck & Kolankiewicz (2000) “The Environmental Movement’s Retreat from Advocating U.S. Population Stabilization” and Weisman’s “Countdown: Our last, Best hope for a future on Earth?”
For many years I volunteered at planned parenthood, zero population growth, and the Sierra Club action groups on population, because this is the ONLY way to reduce the 9 existential threats we face: climate change, biodiversity loss, deforestation, erosion of topsoil, depletion of fresh water, ozone depletion, land-use change, altered bio-geochemical cycles from overuse of fertilizers, ocean acidification, chemical pollution, atmospheric aerosol loading, and the phosphorus cycle (Steffen et al 2015, Rockström J et al 2009). Not to mention fewer traffic jams, less noise pollution — can you think of a single problem that wouldn’t be helped by fewer people?
Fossil fuels are how we were able to exceed these boundaries and overshoot the carrying capacity of the planet, with world population growing from 400 million before coal to 8+ billion today. But it looks like world oil production of both conventional and unconventional peaked in 2018, coal in 2013, and possibly natural gas in 2019, almost as serious as peak oil, since fertilizers are not only made out of natural gas, but use natural gas to create the tremendous heat and pressure to get inert nitrogen in the air to combine with the hydrogen in natural gas — fertilizer that keeps at least 4 billion of us alive today (Fisher 2001; Smil 2004; Stewart et al. 2005; Erisman et al. 2008).
Today the Supreme court undid Roe V Wade, at a time when the carrying capacity of the planet is about to go back to 500 million people and birth control and abortion are the only way to get there besides the four horsemen of the apocalypse…

Looking at all the drops in birth rates for Taiwan, Germany, Switzerland etc I’d have to say investing in any industry aimed at infants might be a bad idea. Yes, every one. Recognize that the level of technology, of life, depends on our level of division of labor. If you have fewer humans, you have less division of labor. You then unwind all things modern, at least at first. No supply chains for computers, electric cars, for deep oil rigs, efficient and clean refineries. No high-production farms, cities.
Suppose 20% of the people vanished today. Who would do their jobs? Do you erase them randomly, in which case 20% of jobs are undone, or Eugenically, in which case only the “Important people” and “My friends” survive? We saw this with “Essential Workers” in Covid: every essential person was put at risk and sacrificed, every non-essential parasite was protected by every means they could impose, scolding us in their pajamas, the BMW parked outside.
But suppose, you, a genius like Lenin, erased all the “Wrong” people and kept all the “Right” people – because you could possibly know who that is. All manufacturing production depends exclusively on volume. This is the “Rise of the Robots” fallacy. Factories are efficient and therefore cheap, exclusively because they are narrow and inflexible. They can ONLY take inputs that are perfect, perfect oil, perfect gas, reliable, perfect electric, perfect plastic types, perfect parts, and they can ONLY output their one product: the case for an iPhone 11, and not 10, 9, and 8.
Cut population 20%, you cut the market for the iPhone 20%. You raise its price 30%. The next one is not made because there is no bankroll to develop its chip because there are no sales for it anticipated. The factory then closes, splits into four factories, each making 1 of 4 components for which the market is smaller, raising costs on each sub-item 25%. This cascades through the system adding 5% to every component, closing factories, bankrupting the bonds those factories owed.
Eventually, where would you be? A much simpler, more expensive world. 1970, perhaps, with copper lines and typewriters. Maybe you like that, that’s okay. But realize that all the solutions you thought with Teslas and iPhones nd cleap solar panels will vanish into luxury goods for the upper classes. 1700 Vienna could make watches and robots too: automaton birds complete with air-powered bird songs. But hardly any were made because the price was too high. You need mass-production. You need volume. “Volume” means “People”.
Maybe that doesn’t matter to you. How about this: for the same reasons, food drops 30% on a 20% population decline. All the HOSPITAL science ALSO stops for the same reasons: no weird, specific, perfectly sterile hospital plastics, implants. No CAT scan machines, no labs, no tests, no drugs for anything but common uses. No lifesaving specialization in nurses, surgeons, experts in that one weird neurology. They fall back to being more generalists, in smaller hospitals with less stuff. Or fewer hospitals you can’t get to.
Pick that if you want, but be honest about it when you sell it worldwide. You will be living in caves. You will have a far lower standard of living. There will be “Less”: less food, energy, choices, products, opportunity, leisure. Who did you think DOES all that besides “Us the people”? Erase “us the people” and it doesn’t get done.
Would that be good for nature? Maybe, except like 1970 we’ll cut down every tree for firewood and light the rivers on fire in Ohio because chemical disposal costs too much. You notice the Soviet Union was not a paragon of environmentalism. They had the “Fewer” people you talk about.

The overreach by the pro-choice movement (with an acceleration over the past 20 years, such as the push for later and later term abortions) + lack of discussion/conversation/involvement in assessing/clarifying/meeting the CHANGING needs/reality of our times – is real. We sat on the sidelines far too long and here we are! More accurately, the powerful pro-choice organization was never set up to acknowledge EVOLVING views/positions, therefore these ideas were never incorporated into operations of “the movement”.

Speaking of overreach, this is what Kunstler consistently references when he fingers the Party of Chaos. Since the natural evolution/progression of the powerful is to overreach, we eventually get to the tipping point. What happens next is up to us.

As the fear porn unleashed during the “pandemic” demonstrates, Americans will, with the right dose of propaganda, believe the lies and crimes of the elite. It is fair to say at the time of this writing that a majority of Americans believe the nonsense Biden and his neocons have put out there about Russia.
The corporate media makes no pretense to objectivity when it telegraphs disinformation and lies to the public. In the last century, two disastrous wars were fought under dubious circumstances. The role of the financial elite in bolstering Bolshevik communism and supporting Hitler before his invasion of Poland is well documented (and is “disinformation” feared by the establishment). Henry Ford’s trucks brought German soldiers to kill American soldiers. It took the intervention of the Roosevelt administration to get bankers, including George W. Bush’s grand daddy, to stop funding the Nazis.

California was considered an epicenter of the American eugenics movement. During the Twentieth Century’s first decades, California’s eugenicists included potent but little known race scientists, such as Army venereal disease specialist Dr. Paul Popenoe, citrus magnate and Polytechnic benefactor Paul Gosney, Sacramento banker Charles M. Goethe, as well as members of the California State Board of Charities and Corrections and the University of California Board of Regents.
Eugenics would have been so much bizarre parlor talk had it not been for extensive financing by corporate philanthropies, specifically the Carnegie Institution, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Harriman railroad fortune. They were all in league with some of America’s most respected scientists hailing from such prestigious universities as Stanford, Yale, Harvard, and Princeton. These academicians espoused race theory and race science, and then faked and twisted data to serve eugenics’ racist aims.
Stanford president David Starr Jordan originated the notion of “race and blood” in his 1902 racial epistle “Blood of a Nation,” in which the university scholar declared that human qualities and conditions such as talent and poverty were passed through the blood.
In 1904, the Carnegie Institution established a laboratory complex at Cold Spring Harbor on Long Island that stockpiled millions of index cards on ordinary Americans, as researchers carefully plotted the removal of families, bloodlines and whole peoples. From Cold Spring Harbor, eugenics advocates agitated in the legislatures of America, as well as the nation’s social service agencies and associations.
The Harriman railroad fortune paid local charities, such as the New York Bureau of Industries and Immigration, to seek out Jewish, Italian and other immigrants in New York and other crowded cities and subject them to deportation, trumped up confinement or forced sterilization.
The Rockefeller Foundation helped found the German eugenics program and even funded the program that Josef Mengele worked in before he went to Auschwitz.
Much of the spiritual guidance and political agitation for the American eugenics movement came from California’s quasi-autonomous eugenic societies, such as the Pasadena-based Human Betterment Foundation and the California branch of the American Eugenics Society, which coordinated much of their activity with the Eugenics Research Society in Long Island. These organizations–which functioned as part of a closely-knit network–published racist eugenic newsletters and pseudoscientific journals, such as Eugenical News and Eugenics, and propagandized for the Nazis.

Seeing reports from all over that young people cannot regulate their lives. At all. Whoever created the video certainly has imagination. I really enjoyed the improvised tools, especially the two man wheelbarrow.Two guys at the video look to me like young architects or later semester architecture students having fun being away from the computer screens.. Concept, scale, proportions and details are just too good. For example reveal at the wall following the descend of the steps would have never be conceived by amateur in million years. Another clue is at the begging of the video, when they “drew the plan”.
The only puzzle could be if there was an additional crew involved, but that is not pressing issue. Pure joy.@red, you mention the attack in the shopping mall in Ukraine. Correctly speaking there was no attack on the mall. It was collateral damage reportedly caused by exploding ammo at an adjoining depot. Also photos from the mall show a near empty car park so the mall wasn’t packed. Reportedly the mall also failed to heed air raid warnings.
Why any government would store ammo in wartime in a built up suburban area is something that the western media has failed to ask
