While tariff noise captured many of the headlines overnight, there was also a curious incident whereby the Editor-in-Chief of the Atlantic magazine reported that he was mistakenly added to a private Signal group chat where plans for US strikes on the Houthis in Yemen were discussed. Participants in the chat appear to include Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz (among others).
Even more interesting than the fact that classified national security discussions were apparently held amongst senior officials via a commercial messaging app (with a journalist along for the ride) is the content of the discussions themselves. The ‘JD Vance’ account noted that “3% of US trade runs through the Suez. 40% of European trade does” and went on to say “I just hate bailing Europe out again” while adding “if there are things we can do upfront to minimize risk to Saudi oil facilities we should do it”. The Pete Hegseth account responded “I fully share your loathing of European free-loading. It’s PATHETIC.”
Participants openly discussed the United States being the only naval power “on our side of the ledger” capable of ensuring freedom of navigation through the Red Sea region. A participant speculated to be White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller added “we soon make clear to Egypt and Europe what we expect in return. We also need to figure out how to enforce such a requirement. EG, if Europe doesn’t remunerate, then what?”
All of this is quite extraordinary, but also quite revealing of the Trump Administration’s thinking on relations with allies and partners. Nothing better highlights the transactional nature of this presidency than the raw geopolitical calculus of cabinet members discussing the need for Europe to be made to pay costs for ensuring the free flow of trade through the Suez Canal. This added trade pressure comes at a time when European industry is already losing competitiveness against American rivals…. Yesterday at the conclusion of the 12 hours of negotiations between American and Russian working groups in Riyadh, the Russian side said it would publish a summary of what was achieved this morning at 11am Moscow time. That deadline came and went… From backchannels, it appears that the delay in publication was caused by bickering with the Ukrainians over the deal, which finally was overcome...
..The problem in 2022 was that the deal was promoted by the United Nations and Turkey, but the USA and Europe were in no way committed to its implementation for the Russians. The whole emphasis was on ensuring that Ukrainian grain reached world markets under the false message that otherwise there would be famine in major grain importing countries which are among the world’s poorest.
The new U.S.-Russian agreement makes the U.S. a facilitator in even-handed treatment of both Ukrainian and Russian interests, and that will be of decisive importance.
As in 2022, Ukrainian export shipments of grain via the Black Sea will be unrestricted though each ship will be subject to inspection to ensure that commercial vessels are not being used to transport war materiel to Ukraine.
However, the deal takes effect ONLY AFTER the United States has ended the sanctions on Russian banks engaged in export of agricultural products, fish products and fertilizers. This means that Rosselkhozbank will be reconnected to SWIFT and correspondent accounts will be opened with U.S. and other banks to handle the respective transactions. Limitations on insurers for Russian flag vessels, restrictions on port services to these vessels will all be lifted. Still more: sanctions will now be lifted on producer and exporter companies in the sectors of agricultural, fish and fertilizer products. Furthermore, Russia will now have sanction-free access to purchase abroad agricultural machinery and equipment needed for its fish and fertilizer production.
Clearly removal of all these restrictions on Russia will be a good down payment on removal of all sanctions of every kind on the country by the USA once a peace treaty is signed.
At the end of the recital of all these agreements relating to restoration of commercial traffic in the Black Sea for Ukraine, there is mention of the intention of Russia and the USA to work out measures to implement the agreement of the presidents on prohibiting attacks on energy infrastructure of Russia and Ukraine for a period of 30 days starting from 18 March with possible prolongation and also with possible cancellation in case one of the parties violates the terms agreed.

Among the “slogans” that are used when criticizing Israel, he said, “The one that bothers me the most is genocide. Genocide is described as a country or some group tries to wipe out a whole race of people, a whole nationality of people. Schumer is wrong. The international Genocide Convention defines genocide as “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group” — with such actions as killing, “deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part,” and “imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group.”
Such actions by Israel have been accompanied by clear evidence of genocidal intent — underscored by hundreds of statements by Israeli leaders and policy shapers.
Scarcely three months into the Israeli war on Gaza, scholars Raz Segal and Penny Green pointed out, a database compiled by the Law for Palestine human rights organization that “meticulously documents and collates 500 statements that embody the Israeli state’s intention to commit genocide and incitement to genocide since October 7, 2023.”
Those statements “by people with command authority — state leaders, war cabinet ministers and senior army officers — and by other politicians, army officers, journalists and public figures reveal the widespread commitment in Israel to the genocidal destruction of Gaza.”

The court rules that the PREP ACT does not prevent individuals from using the state’s constitution to sue for injuries relating to the Covid-19 countermeasures.
In a split decision, the Court reversed in part and affirmed in part, holding that while the PREP Act likely preempts common law tort claims like battery, it does not preempt the plaintiffs’ claims for violations of fundamental rights under the North Carolina Constitution. The Court explicitly recognized two such fundamental rights under the state’s Law of the Land Clause (Article I, Section 19) of the North Carolina Constitution:
-a parent’s right to control the upbringing of their child, including medical decisions;
-an individual’s right to bodily integrity, defined as the “right of a competent person to refuse forced, nonmandatory medical treatment”.
The dissenting opinion argued that the PREP Act’s broad language and purpose demonstrate a clear intent to preempt all state law claims for loss related to covered countermeasures, including constitutional claims.
PREP Act Preemption: The central legal question is whether the federal PREP Act, which provides immunity from liability related to the administration of covered countermeasures during a public health emergency, preempts the plaintiffs’ state law claims.
The Court acknowledges the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which dictates that federal law can preempt state law when Congress intends to do so. When a journalist (like Goldberg for example) is dependent, ultimately, for their stature and income upon the people that they write about, and write to, then their value as a neutral reporter drops to zero.
