In a recent essay I argued that replacing a 150-year-old fossil fuel system with a shiny electrical one in just 25 years to address climate chaos would come with monstrous ecological costs.
I also said it won’t get the job done given that climate change is just one symptom of a greater crisis: the excessive consumption of resources on a finite planet. You had to read deep into the essay to arrive at what I proposed we must do instead of embracing “clean tech” as the blessed saviour.
So let me put it straight here at the top, before I elaborate later: Any imperfect solution to our current civilization-threatening predicament must include dialing down our energy consumption rather than coming up with high-tech visions that keep accelerating it.

Why not pick on Republicans from the start? In the new budget talks, Democrats want pet programs for their base, which are political candy, but cutting them has small effect, while Republicans want Moar ‘defense’ spending. $1T too small? $150B/year extra not enough? ANY cut in this category would have ENORMOUS effect, and shouldn’t be a security problem since our equipment doesn’t work anyway.
This is the present debt-default walk-out. Well, I’m happy for any reason, except this is a stupid one. How about “I’ll cut defense by TWICE what your pet programs are, since they’re small anyway.” It would still be same as last year, since Trump was so Hitler they ADDED money to his defense and Secret State budget voluntarily. Let’s cut to 2016 levels — was that too low? We will still be more than all nations combined, and still buying planes that can’t fly, guns that can’t shoot, boats that can’t turn, and no ammunition.
Well, they are going to have the wonderful effect of bankrupting us and ending it, so that’s good.
