learned yesterday of what will be the final nail in the coffin. Although a 73 year old man young humans at the center of the Gen Z demographic pass through my world. I learned of a child yesterday, a little girl, who is in the second grade. The child cannot read. No learning disability. Child of mid-twenties parent from a middle class background. The child copies the letters on a page but does not know the alphabet. The last test score she received was a 56.
No parent teacher conferences, no special effort from a teacher, no reading with the child at home. Absolutely nothing is being done for this child. The parents have time and the ability to hire a baby sitter so they can go out. Starting with my peers and reaching to the children of Z’ers the decline in literacy quite simply means we have built our on sand. We have moved from didn’t read to can’t read.
