Talk about “moronic beyond comprehension”, there is -0- possibility that Russia (even with China’s aid) could pull off such a task…

Nuclear deterrents would stop them *DEAD* in their tracks.

Nuclear deterrents? Like the USA is willing to be glassed over to save Germany, the Germany they are actively trying to destroy? I assume you are joking. It is pretty obvious to most of us that the USA’s NATO machine is only going into action to save the USA. Even the UK has to get USA permission to launch their Polaris missiles.

So the US dollar appears to be very strong these days. Well not quite so fast here. The US dollar index that everyone mentions is composed of a basket of foreign currencies. The Euro’s weight is about 57%. The Yen’s weight is about 13%. The pound’s weight is about 12%. These 3 currencies make up about 83% of the US dollar index. Sweden Switzerland, and Canada are also part of this index but amount to beans.

Doesn’t matter, the index is meaningless, it is a tool used for valuation. FX matters as that is often a factor in the price of collateral, which is mostly denominated in USD. If your OTC position has lost a lot of value today, your variation or initial margin will require you to top up and in a descending market that means that the reference currency increases in value as people try to buy USD to pay the collateral on deals that may have been struck 20 years ago.

why are people like Von der Leyen, Borrell etc. clamoring so loudly for a thorough investigation when the Whodunnit logic says it may well point to one of their allies?

Because they are sociopaths who can now pretend – duping delight – to be on the side of Germany and the people. Yesterday they were threatening anybody who broke the neoliberal consensus, now that the ability to buy Russian gas has been taken away, they can be more conciliatroy and pretend to be outraged as they know they have now achieved what they want, they are the winners.

I doubt that Germany’s leaders tenure will last very long. People hungry, cold, and broke demand — and get — change.

Except that they won’t get the change that they need, the provision of cheap energy. With NS 1 and 2 destroyed, the Russians will not be investing in pipelines to western Europe any time soon and would logically decide to destroy the Danish pipeline and US gas imports should hostilities continue.

Definitely not Russia as this limits their options: turning off a tap gives them the option of turning it back on again should they so wish, why would they get rid of that option and tie their own hands behind their backs?

The people who did this wanted to remove that option: who benefits from removing that option? The people who want to see Germany collapse without energy. The pipeline will make no difference to the Russian economy, they will sell the gas to China, so the impact will be on Germany.

BUT, do not overlook that the leaders of Germany greatly benefit from this sabotage. The leaders, such as Olaf Scholz, do not need to refuse to turn on the gas and be seen to be destroying Germany. The leaders are no longer seen to be acting against Germany’s best interests, gas is not an option any more and so the tenure of the current leaders is secured.

Goldman said he rushed to get the booster shot, believing he would need it more than most people because once he started chemotherapy, his immune system would be compromised.

Yet they still trust authority, they still believe anthropogenic global warming, they still self-censor in fear of the woke brigade, they still read the Bezos Times. I was at a yoga class the other day and the instructor kept on saying “I am not being sexist but …”, after the lesson I called him out on it and told him nicely that he is a coward who should be pushing back against the “males and females are the same” bullshit, not helping to spread the fear.

We can and we should wish her success. Good luck, Giorgia, you’ll need a lot of it.

She will not succeed without the overt support of the people, the physical support of the people turning out to demonstrate their continued support for her. The elites are already plotting her assassination if she does not do as they say. Support from the people shows that there is opposition to their plans and that an assassination will likely not result in something better … you see this in America where they are trying to criple Trump. Makes you wonder why they think DeSantis would be better than Trump.

The elites would rather control her than kill her off. If she survives then we know she is doing the devil’s work. The trouble with democracy is that there is no one individual in charge, a monarchy has a King/Queen, a democracy has the leaders hiding in the shadows. The world is full of conspirors and worse, full of people willing to do anything for the elites in return for a boost to their egos. The attraction of the Chinese system, where they have Xi to blame, is growing stronger.

Under different circumstances, the West might be celebrating the ascent of this underdog. But her politics are, for the most part, outside the West’s liberal democratic consensus, which is why Italians love her.

The consensus is evidence that democracy does not exist, the wealthy elites have used their money to place their people in the top political positions, thereby preventing the rise of politicians who represent the people. The placement of people using money continues in Italy so I expect there to be a Greece 2 where the elites with money now threaten Italy with financial destruction unless Meloni does as they instuct. You can be sure that they are busy buying lapdogs in her party ready to stab her in the back, the press will be against her, the whole show is likely to come to a sudden stop thanks to the likes of Soros, Bezos etc.

    Professor of Economics Michael Hudson

Why do people listen to this guy? He’s an economist, so I do not expect much, and I get what I expect, but why has this person become an alternative news celebrity? He is as full of crap as the other economists. Sure, he can talk about debt, but having worked in finance, that is kind of the business of finance and nothing he says is news. Nothing he says enlightens me to anything.

A Tale of Two Narratives, Ukraine Edition

This raises one of the very interesting aspects of the Ukraine/NATO war with Russia. NATO is hiding behind Ukraine so that the people of the west will blame Russia and support NATO intervention, or at least that appears to have been the intention although it is not working out so well. With Russia permitting NATO to pretend to be on the “sidelines”, none of the NATO countries have declared “emergency war powers” – a war footing – which means that there are two narratives, None of the NATO countries can clamp down on the second narrative, on “enemy propaganda” or “enemy sympathizers who listen to enemy propaganda” because they are not at war. I am very sure that should NATO officially join the war, emergency powers will be used against all alternative internet sites and their owners will become targets. Will the majority of the populations support this or has the veil been lifted too far now for the majority to be fooled?

Perhaps it is even the first highly visible stage of the end of hierarchy itself

When person A drops litter in the road, there is often a person B willing to scold person A for dropping that litter, and there will certainly be others willing to quietly disapprove of person A’s actions. In such circumstances, person B is taking the role of authoritarian, telling person A how he must behave. Authoritarianism is part of nature, your parents are the first, the hierarchy is part of nature, your parents are the first, there is no ridding ourselves of nature, however much we may dislike bits of it.

Monarchy may be outdated, but the essence of monarchy – the centralised control by ruling elites – will last forever. although it will receive various face lifts until centralized AI – the ultimate monarch – takes over.

The first bluff was the SMO which failed rather badly as demonstrated by the ned for the implementation of a Russian draft.

The SMO captured the pro-Russian regions of Ukraine and Russia will now absorb them into their country. They have also made it clear to the west that any attempt to take them back will be considered a full scale assault on Russia, which, under their existing rules will permit them to defend itself using nuclear weapons. How is this losing? You obviously hate Russia as much as you hate reality.

No. You, like AFKTT, declare assumptions that are plain wrong and refuse to actually discuss your assumptions – your arrogant line is that only an idiot would challenge my assumptions. You then debate some nonsense on the basis of flawed, untouchable assumptions, sending some of us to sleep. So you can add that to your problems, if your assumptions allow.

Now the US justice department and FBI are overtly helping the deep state to bias the US election against Trump. How has any of this got anything to do with capitalism?

the fact that the world’s arable land was already fully dedicated to the task of feeding the world’s huge present-day population

Arable land is defined in the dictionary as the land that could be used to farm crops, however, it is often used by government statisticians to mean the land that is normally used as farmed land to produce crops. The majority of land on the earth that could be arable land is NOT being used as arable land, it is NOT farmed and is NOT used to produce food. We are using about a third of the earth’s food producing capacity, in terms of potential arable land. I am not advocating cutting down rain forests to plant more crops, just trying to prune the looney left factor.

Kind of kidding though: Schrodinger’s Reality, like everything else, we believe a la carte: when they say one thing it’s true and real, when they print the opposite the next day they are stupid and false. Both sides are happy with this, and both point to the Rag as the “Appeal to Authority” the logical ‘fallacy’, as in “fallacious” “false”, “fake”, “wrong.” Maybe if we stop appealing to authority and think for ourselves this can stop but not ‘til then.

Exactly. People still use discredited authority to back up their arguments when it suits, revealing the lack of real evidence for their own beliefs.

This makes no sense. Even when I disagree, I’m sure Russia cannot be having a great time because no army does. His generals are making mistakes because they all do. They have failed to choose wisely and capitalize on opportunities because that always happens. And so far we’re not hearing them snap shut that cauldron, so was it really a trap?

And we agree that cooperation is half of life, while in tribal worlds you’d have to go out of your way, walk 100 miles to meet the other guy, the competition, the rival tribe. Sounds like it must have been overwhelmingly cooperative and not competitive nearly at all. Funny that’s not what they put in the history books, but pretend Og was clubbing Gog all day long, when they — literally — know nothing about it and have nearly no way to measure it. There are still a few tribes in existence, but do they ask how violent and competitive the !Kung tribe is? Nope, because it would show the Professors, and all modern people, to be evil, endlessly violent, barbarians. And the more suits they own, the more barbaric and thoughtless they behave.

Indeed, you look at the levels of corruption in democracies, where the leaders are implementing policies dictated by oligarch individuals hidden behind WEF think tanks, and you wonder how Orban has survived so long. Some trivia. Looking in some rock pools today and saw quite a few of these https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synapta_maculata. The longest was a couple of meters long and, although we knew it was a sea cucumber, coz it has tentacles where its head should be, we were interested to know exactly what it was as it was a busy body, moving around a lot more than the other sea cucumbers. So I go to google and look up Taiwan sea cucumbers, and what do I get, a list of restaurants serving sea cucumbers … no info on the specimen we saw … everything is food round here. Found it in the end by searching for “long sea cucmber”, it is the world’s longest sea cucmber, which makes sense. Now I just have to find the restaurant that serves this particular species, the “snake cucumber”, off to google …

    How are you doing, aspnaz?

Thanks for the thought. We are good. We are shocked by the damage, we know some of the places that were destroyed, we have cycled across that long bridge that fell down.

We are on a windsurfing holiday in a place called Penghu, it is an island in the Taiwan straight. My wife and I were enjoying a beer at a bar on the beech when the first earthquake struck, we felt the earth moving side to side and ran onto the beech away from the building. For us it was mild, we are 65 km away from the main island of Taiwan and on the west side. When we got back to the hotel we experienced a similar aftershock, again very mild.

We are back into the wind tomorrow morning at 8 am, the north easters have arrived, having been delayed by the recent typhoons, so tomorrow is going to be a blast. Next weekend the regulars will arrive from the main Taiwan island, they will be here to enjoy their first big wind weekend of the season. Taiwan has turned into Taiwaii.
